Associate Scientist In Vivo Preclinical Research and Development

The Associate Scientist In Vivo Preclinical Research is part of the Preclinical Research and Development group working with AVROBIO’s discovery platform and translational research teams to generate hypotheses, mechanism-of-action, and efficacy data. The Associate Scientist works closely with our satellite laboratory animal facility team in collaboration with the AVROBIO R&D colleagues. The Associate Scientist coordinates and performs technical work with investigators and maintains an excellent working knowledge of experimental methodology and techniques with rodents; understands and complies with SOPs, protocols and other applicable regulations; collects data and maintains accurate records; performs clinical observations of rodents, experimental procedures, blood collection and dosing. The scientist will also work closely with the Preclinical Research and Development Assay Team to ensure samples from internal in vivo studies are planned for, received, and analyzed in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an in vivo associate scientist for the conduct of non-GLP and IND enabling preclinical studies conducted at AVROBIO satellite sites
  • Work cross functionally to successfully conduct and execute preclinical studies regarding cell and test article availability, coordinating daily technical schedules as well as maintaining vivarium study capacity at any given time
  • Plan, coordinate, and schedule study support
  • In collaboration with AVROBIO scientists and Preclinical Operations Manager ensure protocols and reports are in place for studies and are compliant with IACUC policies
  • Manage all animal orders and related documentation
  • Collaborate with AVROBIO preclinical study teams to effectively perform in vivo studies at our satellite vivarium.
  • Work closely with AVROBIO scientists and CRO personnel to ensure study timelines remain on track
  • Technical experience with murine biological sampling (blood draws, bone marrow aspiration, CSF collection, biopsies for example) and surgical and post-operative supporting care
  • Responsible for animal health monitoring
  • Collaborate with Study Manager and travel to CRO’s to monitor procedures on active IND enabling studies as needed
  • Draft study related documents as needed
  • Maintain study calendars
  • Ensure adequate preclinical documentation for studies
  • Work closely with the AVROBIO assay team and operations manager to ensure study samples follow a chain of custody


  • BA/BS or MS with 3-7 years of experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience with preclinical study coordinating, study protocol generation, and weekly scheduling is a must
  • Strong technical-scientific background and experience with in vivo study execution is required
  • Technical in vitro experience is preferred
  • Project management experience with relevant certification preferred
  • Desire and drive to learn and understand the basic biologic mechanisms underpinning our immunotherapy and gene therapy products
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a matrix environment
  • Team player with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Independently motivated, detail-oriented and excellent problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to verbalize complex study issues and suggest resolutions
  • Excellent organizational skills towards multi-tasking in an extremely fast-paced environment with changing priorities
  • Working knowledge of good laboratory practices (GLP)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects
